Vigilance
With the last salmon run of the season in Alaska, all the bald eagles that have come to feist are on high alert. They maintain a constant vigilance for attacks by other eagles or a chance to acquire a catch from one of their brethren. Having successfully eaten their fill or tired of the ever-present threat of combat, several of the older eagles retired deeper into the forest for a respite. I left the river frenzy and followed them hoping for a eagle-woodland composition. I found this male sitting on a large boulder across some river backwater. With the pines as a backdrop and his elevated position relative to me, my search was rewarded.
