Bluebell Forest

Belgium’s Hallerbos Forest is known for its beautiful purple/blue carpet of bluebells which covers the forest floor for just a few weeks each spring. During peak years the term “carpet” is somewhat of an understatement. With blooms seeming to go on forever, coming up with a good landscape composition and impactful image is a challenge. While walking through the forest, the scenery can start looking all the same. While standing in the middle of the forest that was bathed in early morning light, I felt like I had stepped into a painting. Where many photographers would photograph with the aim of tack-sharp, documentary-style images, I visualized brush strokes and light tones. It was the feeling I got from the forest that I wished to convey in an image rather than just the flowers as individual subjects. Rather than making a postcard-style forest image, I wanted an image that conveyed mood and emotion to the viewer.
